Pet Adoption & Vet Management

Animal shelters struggle with visibility — many adoptable pets go unseen because there is no centralised, easy-to-use platform that also handles the administrative side for shelter staff and veterinarians.

A platform with two personas: adopters can browse pet profiles, filter by species/age/location, and submit adoption requests; shelter staff and vets get tools to manage pet records, vaccination schedules, and adoption applications.

React frontend with Firebase as the backend-as-a-service — Firestore for the database, Firebase Auth for user authentication, and Firebase Storage for pet images. The serverless architecture removed the need to manage backend infrastructure for a university project.

Functional testing of both the adopter and staff user flows. Firebase emulator suite used for local testing without affecting the production database. Verified security rules with the Firebase Rules Playground.

Deployed via Firebase Hosting for zero-configuration deployment of the React app. Continuous deployment set up from the main branch via Firebase CLI.

Firebase is excellent for rapid prototyping but Firestore's query limitations (no full-text search, limited compound queries) required creative workarounds. Algolia would be the right addition for production-scale search.
