Vehicle Rental
A streamlined application for browsing and booking rental vehicles, with full fleet and reservation management for operators.

01. The Problem
A university project simulating a real-world vehicle rental company that managed its fleet, customer records, and reservations manually. The goal was to build a system to digitalise and streamline these operations.
02. The Solution
A desktop application enabling staff to manage the vehicle fleet (add, update, retire vehicles), register customers, create reservations with date-range validation to prevent double-booking, and generate rental receipts.
03. Architecture & Tech Decisions
Desktop application built in Java (Swing for the UI) backed by a MySQL relational database. JDBC used for database connectivity. MVC pattern applied to separate the UI, business logic, and data access layers.
04. Testing Strategy
Manual test cases covering the core workflows: vehicle CRUD, customer registration, reservation creation with conflict scenarios, and receipt generation. Boundary testing on date inputs and rental duration calculations.
05. Deployment
Packaged as a runnable JAR file with a bundled MySQL schema script for easy local setup. Designed for deployment on a local network within a single office environment.
06. Lessons Learned
This project built a solid foundation in relational database design and SQL. Understanding how to model real-world entities (vehicles, customers, reservations) as tables with proper foreign key relationships was a core learning outcome.
